Eamcet counselling disrupted
Hyderabad: Counselling for admissions to Engineering colleges in the Seemandhra region was hit for the second consecutive day on Tuesday due to the ongoing strike against the central government’s decision to bifurcate the state.
The process of certificates verification was stalled at many places as officials boycotted their duties. Majority of the 34 centres in Seemandhra were shut due to the strike by government employees. The Eamcet officials said the counselling could not be held at 14 centres in the region on Tuesday, the second day of counselling.
In Telangana, however, counselling went off smoothly at all the 22 centres, including six in Hyderabad. According to officials, 5,268 candidates registered in Telangana for verification of their certificates while 3,259 registered in Seemandhra, taking the total to 8,527 out of the 15,000 ranks.
Over 200 students from Seemandhra also got their certificates verified at centres in Telangana. Officials pointed out that students could get their certificates verified at any centre in the state. On Monday, 5,500 candidates had turned up for the registration.
Polytechnic college teachers posted at the centres boycotted their duties in response to the call given by their association. The students’ problems were also compounded due to the strike by workers of state-owned Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation as the buses remained off the roads for the eighth consecutive day.
State Council for Higher Education has said that students who can’t get their certificates verified due to the ongoing protests in Seemandhra can do so on any day till September 1.
The Council is going ahead with the counselling on the directions of the High Court despite appeals from some sections in Seemandhra to postpone it in view of the political turmoil.
