Earth’s resources will be stretched: Speaker
Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar said that the world’s population is poised to grow to eight billion by 2025 and it would be stretching the earth’s resources to their limit. She wants Parliaments and parliamentarians to act as agents of change to ensure sustainable development.
Ms Kumar was speaking in a panel discussion on the subject item “The Role of Parliaments in Ensuring Sustainable Development through the Management of Natural Resources, Agricultural Production and Demographic Change” in Geneva on Tuesday.
Being the first Speaker on the subject item, Ms Kumar highlighted the fact that the world’s population is poised to grow to eight billion by 2025.
She informed the Assembly that the Indian Constitution recognises protection and improvement of natural environment as a fundamental duty of each citizen. Legislations have been enacted in the 1970s and 1980s to abate water and air pollution, she observed.
The Speaker appraised the gathering that in India, the National Environment Policy and the National Action Plan on Climate Change are being implemented. India has already launched the National Solar Mission with a target of generating 20,000 MW of solar power by 2022.
Delving on the concept of Green Housing, she said that India’s per capita emission is approximately 1.2 tonnes of GHG and the country is deploying new GHG emission reducing technologies in coal based power generation.
