EC issues notification for first phase of Bengal polls
The Election Commission on Thursday issued notification for the first phase of West Bengal Assembly Election to be conducted in the 54 Assembly constituencies of North Bengal on April 18.
“The Notification has been issued by the Commission for the 54 Assembly Constituencies in the districts of Coochbehar, Jalpaiguri, Darjeeling, North Dinajpur, South Dinajpur and Malda”, Additional Chief Electoral Officer, N.K. Sahana told reporters here on Thursday.
“For the first phase of the polls scheduled on April 18, the last date for the filing of nomination is on March 31 and the last date for the withdrawal of candidature is on April 4.
The nominations will be scrutinised on April 2”, he said. Sahana said “so far four candidates have filed their nomination including one from CPI(M)” in reply to a question. Regarding deployment of forces for the first phase of elections, Sahana said,
“The specific number of deployment of force will be kept a secret but there will be more than adequate number of deployment of force so that people can exercise their franchise freely and safely”.
“There will be approximately 28 observers for 54 Assembly Constituencies and the observers will start going to their constituencies from the date of scrutiny” Sahana added.
