EC sending law & order review team to Kolkata
With political violence escalating in West Bengal in the run-up to the Assembly polls now just a few months away, a team comprising senior Election Commission officials will be making an independent assessment of the law and order situation in the state in Kolkata on Monday.
The six-member team led by Bihar’s chief electoral officer, Sudhir Kumar Rakesh, will be gauging the law and order situation in the state, which has worsened in recent weeks. Apart from Maoist violence, there have been frequent clashes between the Left cadres and those belonging to the Trinamul Congress, as well as trading of charges and counter-charges among leaders of the state’s two political outfits.
The Election Commission decided to send the team to West Bengal after representations from political parties on escalating violence in the state. Chief election commissioner S.Y. Quraishi had expressed concern about the law and order situation in the state during a recent visit there.
During its visit, the team will be going to various districts for an on-the-spot assessment of the situation, after which it will submit a report to the commission.
