ED mulls strict action against Lalit Modi
The Enforcement Directorate is mulling action that can be taken against former IPL chairman Lalit Modi in a bid to tighten the noose on him. The possibility of getting a red corner notice (RCN) issued through Interpol against him is also being looked into. Mr Modi has been continuously evading the summons by the ED, which has forced the ED to think about initiating stringent measures.
According to sources, in order to get the RCN issued against Mr Modi, the ED will have to first book him under the Prevention of Money Laundering (PMLA) Act. “Once the RCN is issued against Modi, following which if he is arrested in London, the ED may request for his deportation also. Under Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) violations, it would be difficult for the Indian agency to request the Interpol for issuing the RCN against,” sources said. The ED is currently probing FEMA violations against Mr Modi.
The ED recently alerted airports and other entry points across the country to detain Mr Modi under probe for alleged violation of FEMA. The former IPL chairman is currently in London.
