Elderly couple found dead, son unaware
The decomposing bodies of an elderly couple lay in their home for five days and were only discovered after a foul stench began emanating from their Jawahar Nagar, Goregaon (west) apartment.
To complicate matters, the couple’s 42-year-old mentally-challenged son was found to have gone about life normally for all five days with his parents lying dead under the same roof.
The incident has thrown up several macabre possibilities with the police speculation ranging from brutal murder to a suicide pact, but it has not yet been able to garner any information from the son because of his mental illness. The deceased were identified as N. Rajan (80) and his wife Chandrika (75), and the man as their son Sujit (42). The bodies were taken to the Cooper Hospital for post-mortem and the police is questioning Sujit. Preliminary inquiries have revealed that Rajan was an acute diabetic, while Chandrika suffered from high blood pressure.
According to the Goregaon police, residents of the Nandanvan building in Jawahar Nagar became aware of a foul smell emanating from a first-floor flat. After knocking the door to no avail, they informed the police. “We broke the door down and saw two dead bodies on the floor of the living room. Another man was sitting silently in front of the bodies, offering them tea and biscuits,” said an officer with the Goregaon police station. Neighbours told the police that Sujit was seen stepping out of several times over the last few days, buying milk and other household necessities.
