An encounter broke out between security guards of Kaziranga National Park and poachers in the early hours of Tuesday, a top official from the national park said. The hunters and the security personnel exchanged fire in the Agratoli Range of the Kaziranga National Park for over an hour.
No animal has been affected in the encounter that took place at the Mowpora camp area of the range, Kaziranga National Park director Surajit Dutta told PTI. A manhunt was launched to track the poachers who fled away under the cover of darkness, Dutta said.
He said four rhinos had been killed by poachers for their horns in 2010. The park had opened for tourists on Monday and 25 foreign visitors among hundreds of domestic travellers visited the Kaziranga National Park on the first day, he added.
