Endosulfan: Oommen Chandy ups payout by 100%
Kerala Chief Minister, Mr Oommen Chandy, has reached out to endosulfan victims again by enhancing the relief amount for pesticide-affected school students of Kasargod.
While students in the UP classes will get Rs 2,000 as relief in place of Rs 1000, the relief for high school students has been increased from Rs 2,500 to Rs 4,000. The decision to enhance their compensation was taken at a high level meeting convened by the Chief Minister at Kasargod on Monday.
Mr Chandy distributed the relief to as many as 486 persons at a function. The UDF government had earlier increased the relief to families of the victims of the pesticide to Rs 1 lakh.
The Chief Minister said the state government had approached the Centre seeking help to evolve a compensation package for the victims.
“This is not an issue confined to Kasargod alone; it has crossed the borders of the district and has become an issue of the entire state,” he said.
The government has written a letter to the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, seeking his help for the relief package, he said.
