Ex-classmates kill teenager, seek ransom in New Delhi

The 19-year-old son of a businessman from Dwarka, southwest Delhi, was allegedly kidnapped by his former classmates, who sedated and strangled the class XII boy, and then demanded a ransom of Rs 50 lakh from the family.

The alleged killers, Raj Tanwar alias Rubail, 21, and Sachin, 20, were nabbed on Thursday from near a Metro station in Dwarka where they had gone to collect the ransom. The body of the victim, Ashish Garg, was found in Naharpur village near Rohini.

Police suspect that the alleged killers had a grudge against Ashish. On Wednesday , they lured him to Naharpur village, where they had rented a room four days ago, on the pretext of celebrating Sachin's birthday.

There the victim was offered a drink adulterated with a sedative but when he did not fall unconscious, the alleged killers injected him with a heavy dose of sedatives. They gave a phone call to Ashish's parents demanding a ransom of Rs 50 lakh.

Meanwhile, the kidnappers got nervous when the teenager fell unconscious and strangled him to death fearing they would be caught if he lived. All three were classmates at Modern International School, Dwarka, where Ashish had studied earlier. Police suspect that more people could be involved.

According to sources the alleged killers had planned the kidnap well in advance. They rented a room in Naharpur village in outer Delhi and made other arrangements for the kidnapping before carrying out the plan on Wednesday.

Police sources said Ashish lived with his parents at Sun Valley apartments in Sector 12, Dwarka. He also helped his father in his business. He left home on Wednesday morning, telling his parents he was going to attend Sachin's birthday party. Ashish parked his bike at the Janakpuri Metro station and went to Rohini to celebrate the birthday.

"One of his friends called Ashish's father, Ashok Garg, and told him that he was going with them for a movie. When Garg called up Ashish, he too told his father the same thing," said a source. After this call, sources said that Ashish's phone was switched off.

Subsequently, his father received a call from the kidnappers around 3pm, who demanded a ransom of Rs 50 lakh from him, without disclosing that Ashish had been killed.

The matter was immediately reported to Dwarka (north) police station and southwest district police, which swung into action under the supervision of DCP Anil Kumar Ojha.

Guided by the cops, Ashish's father initiated negotiations with the kidnappers which continued over several phone calls. Finally, the deal was fixed at Rs 30 lakh. Meanwhile, the police got the number from which calls were being made on surveillance and traced its location.

However, police had no idea that the kidnappers had already murdered Ashish. As per the deal, Ashok Garg arrived at a Metro station in Dwarka to hand over the ransom amount. The kidnappers were caught from the spot and the story of the murder came out.

The body of Ashish has been sent for postmortem which will be conducted at Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital on Friday.
