Explosives, arms seized in Assam

GUWAHATI

The election commission of India has mobilised 350 companies of paramilitary forces to conduct free and fair polling in Assam.
Disclosing that army and commandos engaged in counter-insurgency operations would continue to dominate the fringe and vulnerable area, the additional chief

electoral officer M.C. Sahu told reporters that security forces have seized 102 unlicensed arms, 3,282 cartridges, 297 detonators and 13 grenades from “criminal elements” in Assam between March 2 and 28.
Mr Sahu also informed that 6,569 licensed arms have been deposited with the police and 14,733 people have signed bonds of ‘good behaviour’ to ensure trouble-free polling. Moreover, of the 7,272 non-bailable arrest warrants issued, 4,562 have been executed.
He said that video recording of the poll process will be carried out at 1,315 polling booths, while micro-observers will be deployed at 1,516 booths. “Besides, we have 25 general observers and 21 observers for the first phase polling,” he added. Mr Sahu also said the CEO has sought helicopters from the ECI for quick intervention of poll officials whenever necessary.
