For all those young Indians who have been dreaming of emulating Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton, here is a golden chance.

In an attempt to unearth an Indian world champion, Force India launched its F1 Team Academy on Tuesday.

The Formula One team will conduct ‘Hunt for 1 from a billion’ through trials in seven cities. “Among 1 million people there is one Lewis Hamilton out there and we are going to find him,” said Force India supremo Vijay Mallya on Tuesday.

Force India has drawn out a comprehensive plan of conducting regional trials in various cities, which will be followed by the national final from which ten will be chosen for a week-long programme at Silverstone, UK.

At the end of one week, an expert panel will pick three winners, who will be groomed by Force India, according to the Future Champions Programme.

He also noted that there had been a marked improvement in the motorsport scenario in India and that the future is bright.

“I have been associated with motorsports for the past 30 years and there has been a marked improvement. If we can wait for two-and-a-half decades to win World Cup for the second time I think it worth waiting for a world champion from India too,” Mallya added.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
