Fairness cream ad sparks criticism in Rajya Sabha
An advertisement about a skin cream meant for bleaching private parts of women was slammed in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday with a CPI-M member alleging that it showed ‘perversion’ and questioning the government for not taking any action in the matter.
"This advertisement shows graphic details of a female body in a demeaning manner. It shows perversion of the company," T.N. Seema said raising the matter during Zero Hour.
Seeking the intervention of Information and Broadcasting Ministry, Seema sought action against the advertisers as well as the company for ‘portraying women in a derogatory manner’.
She also pointed out that All India Democratic Women's Association has already demanded action from the I& B ministry against the advertiser and company.
"But till date no action has been taken. No legal action was pursued against the company," she said adding that this happened despite existing mechanisms in place for checking such contents, which prove that these mechanisms are proving ineffective.
As she demanded that the House should condemn it, P.J. Kurien, who was in the Chair, supported her contention saying, "I think the government should take note of it."
