‘Fake student scam no cause for worry’
Even as Bihar’s Opposition RJD announced its plans to begin statewide agitations to demand a CBI probe into the enrolment of lakhs of fake students in schools, chief minister Nitish Kumar on Sunday dismissed the phenomenon as “not a matter for worry” and said a probe was on.
Unmoved by the main Opposition party’s accusations that huge sums of education funds were embezzled, Mr Kumar said the state education department itself was conducting a thorough probe and that there was no scam in the whole affair.
He also ruled out the need for a CBI probe or for the sacking of education minister P.K. Shahi as demanded by the RJD.
“I have myself ordered for the ongoing probe. This is not a matter for worry. I ordered the probe after seeing the rise in numbers of enrolments and the discrepancies in actual attendance figures of students,” said Mr Kumar to journalists after launching a website of the state home department that has details about people convicted by Bihar’s courts.
