Family, party MPs stand by Kani
The noose seems to be tightening around DMK Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi over 2G scam, but she appears confident of coming out clean. When asked if she had the support of the family in her fight, she answered in the affirmative. However, her half-brother and Union minister M.K. Alagiri neither called on her nor spoke to her over the phone, even though three Union ministers of state from the DMK namely Gandhi Selvan, Palani Manickam and Napoleon called on her to express their solidarity with her. Her husband Aravindan, son Aditya and mother Rajathi Ammal are camping in Delhi eagerly anticipating the outcome of Friday’s court proceedings.
According to sources, other DMK MPs are to descend on the national capital late in the evening as a mark of camaraderie. They are likely to converge at senior DMK leader and MP T.R. Balu’s residence before leaving for the court on Friday. Sources also revealed that noted advocate Ram Jethmalani will be her counsel in the case. Contrary to speculations, her father and DMK chief Karunanidhi would not be arriving in the city to be with her in her hour of crisis.
Ms Kanimozhi along with four others have been named as co-accused by the CBI in its supplementary chargesheet, filed in the special court in the 2G spectrum allocation case on April 25. The four others are Kalaignar TV MD Sharad Kumar, Cineyug Films’ Karim Morani, Kusegaon Realty’s Rajiv Agarwal and brother of Shahid Usman Balwa, Asif Balwa.
