Female cop is assaulted by NGO members
A female cop with the Virar police was allegedly assaulted by members of a local non-government organisation in the early hours of Monday morning over an argument in the police station. The police has arrested seven persons in connection with the assault.
According to the Virar police, Priyatama Muthe, assistant police inspector, Virar police station, was on night duty at the station house when the incident occurred. The family of a 17-year-old girl reached the police station to complain against a man named Amit Jha (23), with whom the girl had eloped. The girl’s parents wanted to register a complaint of kidnapping against Jha.
“At the same time, members of a local organisation called the Manav Seva Dal reached the police station and tried to dissuade Ms Muthe from registering a criminal complaint, asking that the matter be sorted without registering an offence. The matter escalated into an argument, and Ms Muthe was manhandled by members of the NGO,” said D.P. Devraj, deputy superintendent of police, Vasai division. Ms Muthe was taken to the Sanjeevani Hospital in Virar after she complained that she was having trouble hearing clearly following the assault. She was discharged after being treated and the police set about tracing the apprehending the people who had manhandled her.
By Monday afternoon, the police had arrested, Sayed Usman (38), Afzal Sheikh (32), Sunny Walia (25), Tabbassum Sayed (26), Afreen Sayed (22), Fehmida Shaikh (40) and Manoj Vishwakarma (29). They were all charged with assault, unlawful assembly and deterring a public servant from discharging their duty. After being produced in court, they were remanded to magisterial custody for 14 days, the police said.
