Filmstars join politics for Assam polls
The practice of filmstars entering politics has been in vogue for quite some time but this time Assam elections may be dominated by several film personalities and retired bureaucrats who have already started joining the political parties ahead of the Assembly elections in Assam.
Veteran Assamese filmstar Nipon Goswami took the lead by joining the Congress on Thursday and expressing his willingness to contest from Tezpur, also known as the cultural capital of Assam.
Mr Goswami has acted in 50-odd Assamese films spanning a successful 30-year career as the lead male cast.
In this race the BJP has also taken the lead by roping in veteran action hero Brojen Bora who is likely to contest from Sibsagar, his birthplace.
Popular singer Vidya Sagar and a young Assamese film director Suman Haripriya are also expected to join the BJP to contest the forthcoming Assembly elections.
Suman is the daughter of Bijoya Chakravarty, BJP MP in the Lok Sabha representing Guwahati and a former Central minister.
The retired bureaucrats of the state Birbhadra Hagjer and Mohammed Alauddin have also thrown their hat into ring by joining the Congress on Thursday. The Congress is believed to have also assured ticket to their loyal bureaucrats who are said to have stood by their party’s government while in service. If insiders are to be believed a former chief secretary and additional chief secretary of the state are waiting for the confirmation of the ticket from BJP and AGP respectively before joining the party.
