Fire in Guwahati Medical College Hospital: Miraculous escape for 65 newborns

Atleast 65 newborns had a miraculous escape when they were timely shifted after a fire broke out in the neo-natal Intensive Care Unit at the Guwahati Medical College Hospital late (GMCH).

Patients and their attendants raised an alarm on seeing the fire last midnight and the babies were immediately shifted to the labour ward of the hospital by doctors, nurses, attendants of patients, GMCH Superintendent Dr Ramen Talukdar said here on Saturday.

Two fire tenders rushed to spot and extinguished the fire within half-an-our. The cause of the fire was likely due to an electric short circuit, sources said. The hospital authorities have instituted an inquiry into the incident.
