Firms fail over coal blocks
In a bid to boost coal production, several private companies have been granted coal mines by the ministry of coal but many of these have yet to start production.
CSE experts lists out how several companies were granted coal blocks in Rampia in 2008, but till December 2010 they had not developed them. In July
2011, the ministry of coal issued a warning that the block would be de-allocated if the work was not kick-started.
The same story was repeated in the Bhandak (West) coal block in Wardha Valley coalfield in Maharashtra where a captive power plant was granted to a private company in 2003.
Despite repeated warnings, the company failed to start work and the coal block was de-allocated in July 2011. A similar story was repeated in Warora (North) coal block when a captive coal linkage was granted in February 2007 to a private player. This ended up being de-allocated in May 2011.
