Fishermen security on priority list
Centre on Wednesday assured Parliament that the welfare, safety and security of the country’s fishermen were given the highest priority. External affairs minister S.M. Krishna said, while replying to a Calling Attention Notice on the issue of killing of Indian fishermen and continuous attacks on them by Sri Lankan Navy, he would take up
the issue during his forthcoming visit to Colombo. The issue also witnessed two brief adjournments after the Congress and the DMK members attacked AIADMK for “politicising” the issue.
Mr Krishna also informed Rajya Sabha that the attacks by the Sri Lankan Navy on Indian fishermen have dropped considerably over the recent times which is a positive development in the region. He said the government and the high commission of India in Colombo had urged the Sri Lankan government to ensure that the Sri Lankan Navy acted with restrain and Indian fishermen were treated in a humane manner. AIADMK member V. Matireyan, who had moved the motion, also attacked DMK government of Tamil Nadu and the UPA government at the Centre while seeking clarification from Mr Krishna about the recent spurt in attacks on Tamil fishermen.
