Five get life term for raping girl with neurological disorder

Five persons were awarded life term on Saturday by a Delhi court for kidnapping and gangraping a mentally challenged 17-year-old girl with the judge asking the city government to give her a compensation of Rs1 lakh.

The court, which also imposed a fine of Rs27,000 each on the five convicts, said the probe agencies and the state should ensure that in rapes cases, where identities of the accused was not known, DNA-matching be made mandatory for effective dispensation of justice.

The court said the copies of its judgement be sent to Delhi government and police for formulating a policy to ensure the accused in such cases are not let off.

"I am hopeful that with due intervention of the senior officers of state and the police, the existing scientific technology (DNA profiling/matching) shall be put to its best utilisation so as to ensure that the guilty are not let off and the innocent do not suffer,” Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) Kamini Lau said.

"I hereby direct that a copy of this order be sent to the Chief Secretary, GNCT of Delhi, Principal Secretary (Home), GNCT of Delhi and the Commissioner of Police, Delhi for information and necessary action."

The court's directions came while sentencing Mukesh, Prabhans Yadav, Deepak, Ravinder Kumar and Rajeev who were held guilty of kidnapping and raping the minor girl in March last year.

The victim, who was ‘a patient of neurological disorder and weak mental capabilities,’ had come to visit the maternal family of her mother in Jahangir Puri here in March last year when the accused persons dragged her to the slum of Mukesh and Ravinder.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
