Five killed, 48 per cent polling in Manipur
Five persons, including a security man, on Saturday killed and two others injured in violence during Manipur Assembly polling, in which 48 per cent voters exercised their franchise till 1 PM.
A CRPF man, three Village Volunteer Force personnel and a civilian were killed and two others injured when militants attacked an interior polling station in Sugnu Assembly constituency in Chandel district, official sources said.
Chief Electoral Commissioner P. C. Lawmkunga, however, said three persons were killed during a shootout at the Dampi polling station in the district.
He said a voter, his supporter and a security man were killed in an exchange of fire.
He said said 48 per cent of 17.40 lakh electorate cast their votes till 1 PM across nine districts - Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishnnupur and Thoubal in the valley and Churachandpur, Ukhrul, Senapati, Tamenglong and Chandel in the hills.
Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh cast his vote at a polling station in Khangabok in Thoubal district.
A total of 12,967 polling personnel were deployed for the elections at 2,357 polling stations.
Around 35,000 security personnel including 27,000 from central para military forces were deployed besides the state armed police.
Bombs suspected to have been planted by militants were seized and defused before the start of polling in Khurai Chingangbam area, Sawombung High School, Khomidok in Imphal East district and Naoremthong High School area in Imphal West district, the sources said.
Two CRPF personnel on poll duty were killed in an ambush by militants in Ukhrul district on Friday, official sources said.
