Flood alert sounded as rivers overflow
Incessant rain lashed parts of North India on Sunday where many rivers were running above the danger mark. The capital Delhi recorded received 0.8 mm of rain.
During the past two days, incessant rains battered Uttarakhand triggering landslides, cloud bursts and flash floods which flattened homes and stranded hundreds of pilgrims with the chardham yatra coming to a grinding halt.
In view of this, the state government has directed all district magistrates to keep a close vigil on the river situation and to evacuate people living on the embankments. The district magistrates have also been asked to keep relief teams in full preparedness so that there is no loss of life and property in case the flood situation worsens.
According to official sources, the Sharda and Ghagra have crossed the danger mark in the state. A statement released by the Central Water Commission says that the Sharda is flowing one metre above the danger mark at Palliakalan while Ghagra is flowing above the danger mark at Barabanki, Ayodhya and Ballia.
The Ganga is rising menacingly at Kannauj, Kanpur Dehat, Kanpur, Dalmau, Allahabad, Mirzapur, Varanasi, Ghazipur and Ballia while the Yamuna is flowing at danger mark in Mavi and rising in Naini in Allahabad.
A flash flood alert has been sounded in Jammu region, where intermittent overnight rains resulted in the flooding of rivers on Saturday. Water levels in Chenab, Tawi, Ujh and Basantar rivers are flowing above the danger mark. Several houses in low-lying areas of Jammu, Samba, Reasi and Udhampur districts have been flooded.
Meanwhile, in Uttarakhand, 23 workers of the state-run UJVN Ltd’s Assi Ganga hydel project, who went missing early on Saturday following a cloud burst in the upper hills of Uttarkashi district, have now been declared dead.
