Flying fighter jet terrifying: Sachin
Cricket legend and IAF honorary Group Captain Sachin Tendulkar may be scared of flying in fighter aircraft but he will, nevertheless, fly in a Sukhoi-30 MKI fighter aircraft of the Indian Air Force in due course. This was announced shortly after the batting maestro was formally conferred the rank of honorary Group Captain in the IAF at
ceremony in New Delhi on Friday. In his address, Tendulkar, smartly wearing the IAF uniform of a Group Captain, said he was revealing a secret that he had once flown in a fighter aircraft in South Africa in 1996 but termed it a “frightening experience”.
The batting maestro however said that he would put in his application to fly in a fighter aircraft now. IAF chief Air Chief Marshal P.V. Naik promptly said that Tendulkar would fly in a Su-30 fighter aircraft in due course. Tendulkar said that his 1996 flight in South Africa was frightening since he was aware that he would have to eject by pulling the lever with a certain grip in case of an emergency and that he could suffer broken elbows during ejection in case the lever was not pulled the right way.
With the clamour growing from various quarters for Tendulkar to be awarded the Bharat Ratna, the cricketer himself responded by saying, “Which Indian citizen would not want to be a Bharat Ratna. It is a great honour.” In his address, Tendulkar termed the conferring of the honorary rank of Group Captain as a “dream come true” and added, “Chase your dreams. Dreams come true.” He further said he was proud to be a member of the IAF and urged the youth to join the IAF in greater numbers. In June this year, President had conferred the honorary rank of Group Captain of the IAF on Tendulkar.
