Fog may hamper flights over Chennai in March too

“Winter is very dry this year except for early morning chill. But then climatologically, the city has been experiencing less than 500 metres visibility for four days in March,” said Dr R. Suresh, director-in-charge, aerodrome meteorological office in Chennai.
A study based on the past 30 years has revealed that Chennai airport witnesses less than 500 metres visibility for six days in February and four days in March. “We expect foggy conditions for about five days in March this year,” added Dr Suresh.
This is bound to affect early morning flights as a minimum of 550 metres visibility is required to operate the runway in Chennai.
Though the authorities may divert flights to Bengaluru and Hyderabad, airport director E.P.
Hareendranathan said airlines could also look at Tiruchy and Coimbatore as alternative destinations.
“We have to look at availability of air traffic controllers and parking space before directing flights to smaller international airports in the state.
Bengaluru and Hyderabad airports work 24 hours and have all facilities to cater to international passengers,” he added.
Last week’s fog led to the diversion of 15 flights and delayed the departure of 25 flights, affecting the travel plans of 5,000-odd passengers.
