Freed Simi activists re-arrested

The five Simi activists, who were serving a five-year sentence for anti-national activities but were released from Khachrod sub-jail in Ujjain district on January 26 were picked up again and sent to jail on Friday night in the midst of massive protests against the state government’s decision to release them on Republic Day.
The Ujjain inspector general of police Upendra Jain told this newspaper that the five Simi activists, who were constantly under the police scanner since their release, have been picked up and sent to jail to serve the remaining sentence.

‘Harassed’ UP worker kills himself

Feb. 4: Yet another government official committed suicide in Aurraiya district after alleging harassment by his senior official.
Rajesh Kumar, 32, a Class IV four government employee, had set himself on fire on Wednesday and succumbed to his injuries late on Thursday night.
The victim’s family has claimed that Rajesh was upset with the manner in which he was being harassed by Parshuram Shankar, an executing officer of the Nagar Panchayat in Aurraiya and this prompted him to take the extreme step. An investigating officer told reporters in Aurraiya on Friday that the executing officer had scolded Rajesh in front of several other employees.

Group wants to ban carcinogens

Feb. 4: The Burning Brain Society, which played a central role in having public smoking banned in Chandigarh two years ahead of the rest of the country, now wants the Indian government to order a ban on all identified carcinogens. Acting in collaboration with the Tobacco Free India Coalition, BBS chairman Hemant Goswami sought a clear pan India law prohibiting the use and proliferation of known cancer-causing substances.
He said only a Central legislation by Parliament would suffice to preclude “corporate manipulation, pulls and pressures.”

Applications for Fulbright-Nehru scholarship open

Feb. 4: The United States-India Educational Foundation (USIEF) announced the opening of its annual competition for Fulbright-Nehru and other Fulbright fellowship opportunities for study, research, teaching and professional development in the US on Friday.
Outstanding Indian students, academics, teachers, policy planners, administrators, and professionals from all disciplines are encouraged to apply. The India-US bilateral Fulbright agreement has resulted in a significant increase in the number of scholarships awarded each year. The USIEF expects to offer approximately 120 Fulbright-Nehru fellowships for Indians in 2012.
Fellowship details are posted on the USIEF website www.usief.org.in. Application deadline begins May 1, 2011.
