Gadkari targets ‘Rajkumar’ Rahul
Continuing his tirade against the Congress-led UPA government, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday asked AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi why he did not see the plight of poor when he visited the shanty of a poor woman, Kalawati. The BJP chief was referring to the large-scale rotting of foodgrains.
Mr Gandhi had drawn the country’s attention to the plight of Kalawati Bandurkar, a widow of a farmer, when he recounted her story in Parliament in 2008 after visiting her home in Vidharba region.
“When Rajkumar (a reference to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi) eats food at the house of Kalawati, can’t he see the rotten foodgrain and the plight of the farmers?” BJP chief asked. He was participating in a discussion on inflation organised by the party.
Attacking the Congress, the BJP chief said while the Congress claims to work on slogans like “Garibi Hatao”, it was actually trying to “wipe out” the poor.
The Supreme Court also took a serious note of large-scale rotting and wastage of food grains across the country due to lack of storage facilities, observing that not a single food grain should be wasted.
The Congress, meanwhile, dismissed the BJP chief’s remark against Mr Gandhi saying it attached no importance to the remarks. “When the BJP president says something seriously, we will respond to it,” party spokesman Manish Tewari said.
Continuing his attack on the Congress, Mr Gadkari said farmers were forced to commit suicide as they were not getting appropriate income for their produce. On the price rise issue, the BJP said it would intensify its attack on the Congress-led UPA by holding a series of agitations against the issue along with mismanagement in food grain storage.
The party would also protest against the “misuse of CBI” starting from Thursday. BJP leaders are meeting president Pratbiha Patil on Thursday on the price rise issue.
The party would also be organising garib panchayats at the grassroots level to involve the common man in issues like rotting food grain in FCI godowns.
Beginning Thursday, party workers will stage a dharna outside all CBI offices to protest the “misuse” of the premier investigation agency.
The decision was taken during the meeting of the BJP’s state unit office-bearers.

JAMMU
July 28: Accusing the coalition government of discriminating against Jammu region, the state BJP has taken exception to the Cabinet decision to appoint a commission of inquiry (CoI) to look into recent disturbances in the Kashmir Valley leading to the death of 17 people and giving compensation to the next of the kin of those persons of Rs 5 lakhs.
Addressing the media, three MLAs of the party, including former state president Ashok Khajuria, alleged that the double standards of the state government were too evident as it did not announce any probe into the 2008 killings by the police of 12 people in Jammu during the Amarnath land row agitation.
