Gali Janardhan Reddy seeks facilities cell
Former Karnataka minister and mining baron Gali Janardhan Reddy and his brother-in-law B.V. Srini-vas Reddy on Monday sought facilities accorded for special class prisoners.
A petition in this respect was moved in the Special Court for CBI cases soon after the court extended their judicial remand till November 14.
Though Mr Janardhan Reddy is eligible for the status, its subject to the court's discretion. According to officials, the status is usually provided to high status prisoners and are not charged for heinous crimes.
Sources say that as Mr Janardhan Reddy is an MLC in Karnataka, he can claim the status by pleading that living with ordinary criminals would undermine his prestige.
Usually, the court takes a call on such petitions once the district collector approves the eligibility criteria of the applicant. On being contacted, Chanchalguda central prison superintendent Keshav Naidu maintained that facilities would be provided to Mr Janardhan Reddy in accordance with the court's order.
As of now only three under-trial prisoners, former Satyam Computer’s chairman B. Ramalinga Raju, his brother Rama Raju and former CFO Vadlamani Srinivas are being accorded the status.
Once accorded the status, they will be given a room, fan, table, light, shelf to keep books, newspaper, stove and gas cylinder to prepare food.
