Gambling cases on the rise in Andhra Pradesh

Hyderabad: The state has reported an increased number of gambling cases, according to the State Crime Records Bureau.
Anantapur, Krishna, Vijayawada, West Goda-vari, East Godavari, Kurnool and Prakasam districts gained notoriety for their gambling dens, with the maximum number of cases reported from these districts.
Hundreds of crores are changing hands in cockfights, teen patti (a game of three cards) and other unauthorised gambling practices, in violation of the AP Gaming Act.
Anantapur tops list
A total of 87,988 cases of gambling were reported in 2012 as against 83,533 in 2011 with an increase of more than 5,000 cases. Anantapur tops the list with around 11,199 followed by Krishna with 10,207 and West Godavari, with 9,962 cases.
Interestingly, in many areas, the local police, in connivance with the gambling den organisers and clubs, turn a blind eye.
Coastal Andhra Region inspector general of police Ch. D. Tirumala Rao says, “Cockfighting and teen patti are very common violations in coastal Andhra districts like Krishna and Godavari. Police have been conducting raids on the gambling dens and registering the cases. During Sankranti season, the maximum number of violations are reported.
