Gangster who ‘fled’ reappears
The curious case of Chhota Rajan gangster Vicky Malhotra — who is believed to be close to the Intelligence Bureau — took another twist when he surfaced at the Mumbai police’s crime branch headquarters at Crawford Market.
As first reported by this newspaper, the man’s disappearance three days after he was bailed out of Thane Jail, had left the Mumbai police extremely red faced as Malhotra was supposedly under crime branch surveillance, owing to his status as a top-rung underworld operative.
Crime branch officials managed to trace Malhotra to Kolkata and then turned up at the Crawford Market office with a team of crime branch officers, said sources.
The crime branch had formed a special team to trace Malhotra after he went missing after getting bail.
According to a senior crime branch officer, the crime branch had received information that Malhotra, who is now the only big name in Rajan’s gang, was planning to leave the country as he feared that there was a threat to his life. A special team was formed to track his moments.
“He was traced to his brother’s house in Kolkata. We have recorded his statement and that of his brother. Malhotra has stated in the statement that there was a threat to his life from Bharat Nepali,” said a senior crime branch official and added, “As there are no conditions laid down by the Bombay high court while granting bail to him, we cannot tell him to stay within Mumbai limits and the bail orders have also not specified that he should stay in the country.”
Last month, the HC granted bail to Malhotra, stating that he should present himself twice a month before the crime branch.
