Gawli gets life sentence
The MCOCA court on Friday sentenced gangster Arun Gawli and 10 others to life imprisonment in connection with the 2007 murder of Shiv Sena corporator Kamlakar Jamsandekar. All the accused have also been ordered to collectively pay a fine of Rs 1.38 crores.
A week ago, Gawli and the other 11 accused — Sandeep Gangan, Vijay Kumar Giri, Ashok Jaiswar, Narendra Giri, Anil Giri, Sahebrao Bhintade, Srikrishna Gurav, Pratap Godse, Ajit Rane, Sunil Ghate and Suresh Patil — were convicted of murder, conspiracy, extortion and organised crime. Special MCOCA judge Prithviraj Chavan on Friday sentenced 10 of them to life imprisonment, while Ghate was let off as he had completed the duration of imprisonment during his trial.
Special public prosecutor Raja Thakre said, “The orders passed by the court are fair.” The prosecution had sought the death penalty. On the other hand, Gawli’s counsel, advocate Sudeep Pasbole, said, “We were never expecting this judgment. We will definitely approach the Bombay high court to appeal.”
