Geelani promises safety to pandits
Dozens of activists of Jamait Ahl-e-Hadith, a religio-social organisation, along with large number of supporters took to the streets here on Sunday demanding death for the killers of its president Moulana Showkat Ahmed Shah.
The protest was held after an emergency meeting of the Jamait called for a threadbare discussion over the police claim that it has arrested Shah’s killers and that he became victim of a conspiracy by his detractors within in connivance with a group of militants after having failed in their campaign to remove him through organisational elections.
The protesters chanting slogans against the alleged assassins demanded that they be hanged immediately. The Jamiat has also called an all-party meeting here on Monday to discuss the development.
Meanwhile, hardline separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani has assured the Kashmir Pandits that vast majority of the Valley’s Muslim population is willing to protect them if they decided to return to their homeland. Mr Geelani during a visit to migrant transit camp at Vessu in southern Anantnag district on Sunday, however, termed the plan seeking to create “safety zones” for the members of minority community, a vast majority of which fled their homes in the wake of Kashmiri separatist campaign bursting into a major violence over two decades ago as “ill-advised.”
