George wife allowed to take care of him
The Delhi high court on Monday said that there was no need for ailing former defence minister and Rajya Sabha member George Fernandes to change his place of residence and allowed his wife to take care of him till July 19.
After continuous one-hour in-chamber hearing, Justice V.K. Shali directed Ms Leila Kabir, the ailing leader’s wife, to take care about his health.
Earlier in the day, Mr Fernandes, who is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, on Monday failed to give his mind to the Delhi high court as to with whom he wants to stay with; his wife or brothers.
Rather, he confused Justice Shali by expressing similar gestures while interacting with his wife and his brothers in the judge’s chamber.
While interacting with his wife, he clutched her hand to his chest without saying any word. When his brothers introduced themselves to him and asked something in Konkani, he said that they are six brothers.
From these two interactions, Justice Shali said that Mr Fernandes looked happy with both parties.
The court in his order said that Mr Fernandes was not able to articulate himself. He was not able to complete his sentence. He spoke only a few inaudible words in response to queries posed to him by Justice Shali. He had come to the court in a wheelchair.
The proceedings were conducted in the judge’s chamber to ensure comfort and peace for Mr Fernandes when he felt uncomfortable in the courtroom.
Two persons known to Mr Fernandes and his attendant were present with him in the chamber when the proceedings were conducted.
Later, Justice Shali adjourned the matter to July 19 for further hearing and said that the existing arrangement vis-à-vis Mr Fernandes would continue.
The court had on last Thursday asked Ms Kabir to produce Mr George before the court to ascertain his views as to whom he wants to stay with.
Justice Shali has been hearing a suit filed by two brothers of Mr Fernandes, Richard Fernandes and Michael Fernandes, seeking his custody as well as a permanent restraint on Ms Kabir and her son Sean from taking the socialist leader out of Delhi.
The leader is at present in the custody of his wife here in the capital. There is a restraint on the wife-son duo from taking Mr Fernandes out of Delhi.
Ms Kabir wants to take him to the US for treatment.
