Girl assaulted, no help from onlookers, cops
In what seemed to be a replay of the Guwahati incident, a young girl was heckled and abused by two men in Bagahi locality in Babupurwa in Kanpur district on Saturday night.
According to reports reaching here, the girl, aged around 22 years, was returning from work in the evening when she was accosted by two men. The two men stopped her and started using abusive language. When she protested, they started getting physical with her. The girl tried to fight back and the two men lost their cool. One of them whipped out his belt and began whipping the girl in full pubic view while the other kicked her in the stomach.
The girl’s screams attracted a large crowd but not a single person came forward to help the girl or stop the men. The girl was subjected to physical violence for almost half-an-hour after which she collapsed on the road. The two men, finally, ran away hurling abuses at the girl.
The girl managed to reach her home where she narrated the incident to her family members. The girl then came with her younger brother to the Babupurwa police station but the cops refused to register her complaint.
The girl’s family then contacted a women’s organisation and other relatives and again went to the police station. After a prolonged argument, the police finally registered her complaint around midnight on Saturday.
