Girl dies in police custody, arson, locals clash with police
A teenaged girl died after remaining in police custody amidst allegations that she might have been tortured in Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi district, after which angry locals clashed with police and indulged in arson on Friday protesting her death.
Preliminary reports said 16-year-old Anchal was taken into police custody after her maternal uncle had eloped with another girl of Purola area.
Police sources said Anchal's father allegedly had a role in the elopment of the maternal uncle and police had picked her up when they went to her residence but failed to find her parents. After remaining in police custody for one full night, the girl was released on Thursday morning and was dropped at home by the police.
Soon, Anchal developed uneasiness and died on way to hospital on Thursday.
This angered the people of her township who came out on the streets on Friday stoning government vehicles and indulgin in arson demanding stern action against erring policemen.
A couple of protesters were injured in the violence.
A posse of police personnel have been deployed in the area to bring the situation under control. Chief minister Vijay Bahuguna has ordered an inquiry into the incident and said strict action would be taken against the culprits.
"We will not spare anybody in case anyone is found guilty", said Bahuguna.
