Girl dresses as a boy to avoid rape
In a grim reminder of the plight of girls in our country, a seven-year-old girl from Punjab, whose 14-year-old elder sister was raped in 2012, has started dressing up like Sikh boy in order to feel save from the praying eyes of the potential rapists.
The seven year old Surjeet Kaur (not her real name) of a village near Bhatinda has decided that dressing up like boys is the only way to keep her safe.
This young girl is not supporting a plat like other girls of her age, but instead wears a Pakta (turban worn by young Sikh boys).
The rape of her elder sister had such a effect on her that she now wants to be a Baptised Sikh (Baptised Sikh women wear Patka) so that nobody dares to touch her.
Even as a fast track the court has announced life imprisonment to the two of the seven accused of the rape of the Surjeet’s elder sister.
The family has not been able reconcile to the tragedy that has just changed everything for them.
The father of the girl tells that they have been forced to sell their land and move out of their village to Mansa.
Their elder daughter (rape victim) has turned into an emotional wreck after the incident. The family feels that feel little secure by dressing their elder daughter as a boy.

In Koda case, court attaches `144 cr assets
Age Correspondent
New Delhi, Sept. 11
The Enforcement Directorate (ED), probing the multi-crore hawala racket involving former Jharkhand chief minister Madhu Koda, will soon attach immovable properties worth `143 crore belonging to Koda and his close associate-Anil Adinath Bastawade. The order for attachment of the flats, in posh localities of Pune and Mumbai, and a shopping Mall in Jamshedpur has been issued by a special money laundering court in Delhi.
Sources said the ED’s Lucknow zone office had issued attachment orders on these assets in February 2013 and with this order it will now be able to issue prohibitory orders on them. “The above materials (prosecution evidence) and the submissions made me feel convinced that prima facie all the properties provisionally attached are involved in money laundering and, therefore, liable for attachment,” the court said.
I, therefore, order for confirmation of the provisional attachment order in question,” K. Raamamoorthy, Chairman of the Adjudicating Authority of PMLA, said in his order.
The assets will also be attached to include properties of Manoj Punamiya, another associate of Koda and an accused in the case.
