Give up stir: Vasan to N-protesters
Concerned over anti-Kudankulam protesters' threat to stall activities of the Thoothukudi port, Union shipping minister shipping minister G.K. Vasan on Friday appealed to them to give up their plan as that would not be taken by the people “in a positive manner”.
“People know that these sorts of agitations to stall port activities are not in the interest of the country. They will not like it”, Vasan said in a statement here.
His appeal came a day after S.P. Udayakumar, convener of the Peoples Movement Against Nuclear Energy(PMANE), spearheading the agitation against the Kudankulam plant, issued the threat that fisher folk along with anti-nuke activists would block the Thoothukudi port by their boats on Saturday.
Pointing out that the port contributed much to the nation’s economy and provided employment to millions of people stir against the Kudankulam Nuclear Plant, Vasan said blocking movement of ships would harm the region’s export-import trade.
He expressed confidence that the state government would ensure that the port operations are not affected.
