Go to villages, Abdul Kalam tells doctors

Former President Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam has advised doctors to go to villages and serve the poor.

At the 14th annual convocation of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) on Saturday, he said, “Please take a white paper and write down why you should be remembered by others. You will find answers why doctors should go to villages.”

“Many doctors with their social service have brought good name to the doctor fraternity. But many young doctors of today either go abroad or open clinics. There are very few who opt for rural service,” he said.
“Today’s doctors should think about stopping the spread of HIV/AIDS and bettering the life of senior citizens,” he said.

Later he held an hour-long interaction session with the students.

Governor H.R. Bhardwaj presented the degrees. Medical Education Minister S.A. Ramadas and V-C K.S. Shriprakash were present. Dr C.N. Manjunath and Honnappa Fakirappa Naikar were presented the ‘Doctor of Sciences’ (Honoris Causa) awards.

Meanwhile, Dr Vishwajith Pai, who secured the highest number of gold medals (eight) said, “This is the greatest moment of my life. Every day, I used to study for more than six hours. During holidays, I studied for more than 16 hours. I attribute my success to my parents who encouraged me a lot in my life.”
