Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi who sent an olive branch to jailed Ulfa leaders by taking a Cabinet resolution for peace talks also facilitated a meeting of the general council of the outlawed United Liberation Front of Asom inside the jail to enable the outfit to take resolution for holding peace talks with the government.
The outlawed Ulfa vice-chairman Pradeep Gogoi and publicity secretary Mithinga Daimary, who recently got enlarged on bail, were allowed to enter the jail to attend the meeting of Ulfa’s general council on Friday.
Daimary however in a written statement after the meeting said that it is not proper to talk of negotiation with Ulfa without its commander-in-chief Paresh Barua. Daimary, who is close to the Ulfa chairman Aravinda Rajkhowa, said that they never favoured negotiation without Ulfa chief.
About the peace talks and meeting of the general council of the outfit, Daimary said that it was held under the leadership of its chairman Arbinda Rajkhowa inside Guwahati jail on Friday.
He clarified that the general council meeting was held in response to the government’s invitation for peace talks. The meeting of the general council as claimed by Daimary discussed the proposal of the government for holding talks.
The modalities of the talks and where they would be held was yet to be decided as the discussion was in the initial stage, he said.
