GoM: Finish work before August 1

The GoM on Commonwealth Games on Wednesday asked all the agencies to try and finish their work by August 1 and hand them over to the organising committee (OC) as the latter also needed time for streamlining various aspects of the event.

Talking to reporters following the meeting, Union sports minister M.S. Gill said that the GoM was concerned over rampant digging and other related works going on in the capital. He added that it was imperative to clear the roads and complete the projects at the earliest so that the OC can take over and give finishing touches to the projects.
Mr Gill further informed that the DDA’s work on renovating and upgrading of nearly 3,000 flats at Vasant Kunj, which are supposed to provide nearly 5,000 rooms for tourists during the Games, was going at a slow pace. A team of senior officials has been constituted to monitor the developments on a 24x7 basis. The Indian Tourism Development Corporation is looking after the interiors of these flats, which will provide high-end hotel experience to the delegates and tourists. These flats were supposed to be available by September. However, the GoM has asked the authorities concerned to expedite the process.
The GoM also saw the presentation for the opening ceremony, which will comprise 40 minutes of cultural programme, followed by about two-and-a-half hours of march past and other activities.
Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit, who was also at the meeting, said that her government was fully aware about the deadlines and every effort would be made to complete all the projects within the deadline.
Earlier, the Delhi government had asked the civic agencies to clear construction debris by August 10 and also told them that no digging or cutting of roads would be allowed beyond July 31.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
