GoM meet on caste census July 1
The GoM on caste census headed by finance minister Pranab Mukherjee is scheduled to hold its first meeting on July 1. The meeting is going to take place following a war cry made by the Yadav-troika (Mulayam, Lalu and Sharad) that the government is backing out on its promise.
Confirming that the GoM will meet Thursday, sources in the government said, “The agenda for the meeting has been sent to all member ministers in the panel. The agenda for the meeting comprises of the proposal prepared by ministry of home affairs suggesting inclusion of caste in the census at the time of taking biometric details of Indian residents.”
Conscious of the fact that the demand for inclusion caste enumeration in the ongoing census exercise has the potential to disturb the government during upcoming Monsoon Session of the Parliament, scheduled to begin in the third week of July, the GoM is likely to firm up its opinion in its first meeting itself, the sources said. They added that the matter would then be taken to Union Cabinet for its approval.
