Government prefers survival over morality, says BJP
New Delhi: Accusing the government of preferring 'survival over morality', the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday said it would continue to press for Telecom Minister A. Raja's ouster over the 2G spectrum scam and that it was for the ruling alliance to find a solution to the impasse in parliament.
"The government has created an infrastructure for a cover-up. There is a pliable CVC (Central Vigilance Commission) and a pliable CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation). It has no concern for probity or accountability," said senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley.
Jaitley, who is leader of opposition in the Rajya Sabha, said Raja's decisions on 2G spectrum allocation caused heavy loss to exchequer and some allottees also made huge profit. Referring to the Comptroller and Auditor General's (CAG) report, he said it had confirmed the allegations against Raja.
The CAG report was submitted to the government on Wednesday and is believed to have indicted Raja. The scam is said to have caused a loss of Rs.1.76 lakh crore to the government.
Jaitley said he did not expect the government to prefer morality over survival.
"It has preferred self-survival over accountability," he said, adding that the BJP would use public opinion and parliament fora to pressurise the government.
Asked about the winter session of parliament that began on Tuesday and has not transacted any major business so far, Jaitley said the session would be 'historic'.
"It will expose the government."
The BJP leader said his party would not compromise on the issue of corruption and the onus was on the government to find a solution to the impasse in parliament.
Both houses of parliament were on Thursday adjourned without any business being transacted for the second consecutive day. The houses will meet again on Monday.
Raja is a member of DMK which is part of the ruling Congress-led alliance.
