UP govt bans peace marches
The Uttar Pradesh government has cancelled all peace marches scheduled to be held in the state on the eve of Babri verdict. The state government has also sealed the UP-Nepal and the UP-Uttarakhand border to prevent any kind of infiltration.
The principal secretary of home, Kunwar Fateh Bahadur, has sent directives to all the district magistrates and district police chiefs, asking them not to permit processions, rallies and meetings in their districts. The move has been taken to maintain law and order in the state, particularly communally sensitive districts.
It is noteworthy that a large number of social and religious organisations in UP had sought permission for taking out peace marches to appeal to the people to maintain peace when the verdict is pronounced.
“Permissions issued earlier also stand cancelled with immediate effect,” said a senior home department official. The government has also banned celebratory firing. Meanwhile, IG Bareilly, Gurbachan Lal, said that the state’s borders with Uttarakhand and Nepal had been sealed.
