Govt keen on land bill, Trinamul will oppose
The government may be keen to see the controversial Land Acquisition Bill legislated into law by Parliament during the on-going Winter Session.
But the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamul Congress, for sure, will not allow this to happen given the party’s policy against any forcible land acquisition.
According to the Trinamul’s chief whip in the Lok Sabha, Sudip Bandopadhyay, ministers representing the government maintained a studied silence on the bill when he raised it during the all-party meeting held on the opening day of Parliament’s Winter Session. Curiously though, Union minister for parliamentary affairs, Pawan Bansal, had told reporters last week that the controversial bill would be introduced in Parliament in the winter session.
However, as Mr Bandopadhyay, there was no response from ministers belonging to the Congress when he raised the issue of the Land Acquisition Bill during the all-party meeting called by the Lok Sabha speaker on Tuesday.
With the Trinamul having expressed its’ stout opposition to the bill time and again given its stand against any forcible land acquisition, the government will indeed find it extremely difficult to push the legislation through.
