Govt moves to check cancer, heart diseases
A sharp escalation in cases of diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and strokes has seen the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs take a decision on Thursday to set aside Rs 1,231 crores for diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular diseases for the remaining Eleventh Plan period.
Out of this, Rs 499.38 crores will be used for interventions on diabetes and cardiovascular diseases & stroke and the remaining Rs 731.52 crores will be used for cancer control on a 80:20 cost sharing basis between the Centre and the states. It also approved the inter-usability of funds to allow for greater operational flexibility.
The money will be used to screen a seven-crore adult population over the age of 30 for early diagnosis in 15 states. The programme to promote a healthy lifestyle will be implemented throu-gh 700 community health centres and 20,000 sub-ce-ntres. The country is experiencing a rapid health transition with Non-Communicable Diseases accounting for 42 per cent of deaths in the potentially productive age group of 35-64.
