Govt, Opp. working on draft to end impasse

The government and the Opposition managers, especially the BJP leaders, are working on a face saving draft to end the week-long deadlock over the price rise issue in Parliament.

The Leader of the Opposition Sushma Swaraj met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday against the backdrop of reports of division in the Opposition rank on continuance of the logjam in Parliament.
After the meeting, finance minister Pranab Mukherjee also met RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav to break the impasse.
Later, Mr Lalu Prasad said that after the Speaker disallowing adjournment motion, it is for the government to decide under which rule it wants the discussion on price rise to take place.
On the other hand, the government is under the pressure from its allies — the Mamata Banerjee led Trinamul Congress — and the supportinting parties like the Samajwadi Party, BSP and the RJD, to break the impasse. These parties may not want to vote against the government in Parliament, but they are criticising the government for the sky rocketing prices of essential commodities.
Therefore, the government is under the pressure from its allies and supporting parties and a section of the Opposition to break the impasse through a “honourable solution.”
Though the government managers are tight-lipped on a face formula, they are confident that Parliament would run from Monday. The main Opposition BJP cannot stretch this issue too long if the Left, BJD, TDP, SP, BSP, RJD and others agree to take part in parliamentary business. Even a section of the BJP is opposing the current strategy of the party. And the suggestion of a face saving resolution came from this section about three days back.
Meanwhile, a formula is reportedly being worked out which could be acceptable to both the sides that have pushed themselves to their corner with a demand for a vote on the issue of prices and strongly opposing it respectively. A breakthrough may be achieved on Monday when both the Houses could transact after the whole of this week was a “no show” this week.
