Govt refutes Davy claim
Battling charges that the then Central government had a role to play in the 1995 Purulia district arms-dropping episode, the government appeared to go on overdrive on Saturday to refute this allegation. The allegation has been recently levelled by one of the masterminds of the operation Kim Davy, whose extradition from Denmark to face trial here has been sought for long by the Indian government.
On Saturday, not only was there a detailed statement issued by the PMO on the controversial arms-dropping case but another clarification came from the Union home ministry.
The PMO in its statement said that Davy’s allegations were “mischievous and aimed at misleading the prosecuting agency and a court in Denmark”.
A Danish court is currently hearing the matter of Davy’s extradition to India to face trial. The government further said that any new fact emerging at any time would be looked into by the CBI, which is investigating the case. The PMO statement further said that “Notwithstanding what Kim Davy and Peter Bleach, a convict in this case, have said to a section of the media, the fact remains that no government agency connived or helped them in their heinous act.”
Both, Kim Davy and Peter Bleach, accused in the Purulia arms drop case in an interview to a news channel had claimed that the Purulia arms drop case was carried out by the political forces at the centre to destabilise the Left Front government of West Bengal.
“Government of India and the CBI are acutely conscious of the fact that nothing should be done at this stage that will prejudice the extradition proceedings or the intended trial of Kim Davy after his extradition to India,” said the statement. The case remains under investigation and any new facts emerging at any time will be looked into by the CBI in a professional manner, the statement said adding the government is committed to unravelling the truth and the entire conspiracy behind the crime and to bring all the guilty to justice.
When Davy is extradited and put to trial, he will get ample opportunity to explain his contentions and his defence to the courtwhich will decide on his culpability as per the evidence and the law, the statement said. The CBI on Friday also rejected claims of Davy and said the agency has clinching evidence against him and is making all efforts to bring him to India to face trial.
