Govt rejects JPC over Adarsh scam
While the Opposition cries itself hoarse seeking a probe by a joint parliamentary committee (JPC) into the Adarsh housing society scam, the government on Wednesday rejected this demand saying that there are a large number of similar housing estates in different parts of the country.
This distancing of the Centre from the housing scam came even as the Congress chose to remove Maharashtra chief minister Ashok Chavan in the wake of the scam and replace him with Prithviraj Chavan, who was minister of state in the PMO.
The government’s dismissal of the demand for a JPC probe from Union minister of finance, Pranab Mukherjee. Responding to reporters questions outside Parliament, Mr Mukherjee said: “The Adarsh housing estate is like thousands of housing estates in various states. The Government of India has nothing to do (with it).” As for the 2G spectrum allocation scam on which CAG is ready with its report, Mr Mukherjee said, “We have already instituted an inquiry before the MPs demanded it. As regards the CAG report, he said that there were clear provisions in the Constitution and constitutional provisions would be followed.”
Mr Mukherjee even lost his temper for a few moments after reporters made a move to ask him more questions telling them that he wasn’t there “to be cross-examined.”
