Govt roping in ex-Army men to tackle Maoists

Government is roping in all kinds of expertise, including that from the Army, to train and enhance the capabilities of paramilitary forces like CRPF and BSF, a top officer said on Tuesday.

Secretary (internal security) in home ministry U.K. Bansal said the "government is actively promoting all kinds of expertise" which are required by Central police and paramilitary forces.

Bansal was replying to a question on why the knowledge and experience of Army personnel and officers is not being utilised in the central security forces.

CRPF chief K. Vijay Kumar, who was also present along with Bansal at a conference here, said CRPF is recruiting ex-army men in the force and is creating an IED school to counter improvised explosive devices in collaboration with the Army.

Bansal said eligible army personnel can also apply for fresh recruitment even as home ministry is planning new rules for induction of additional officers in Indian Police Service (IPS).

CRPF is inducting more than 2,000 former army personnel in one go to bolster its anti-Naxal operations, offering them a salary of upto Rs 55,000 per month.

A total of 2,012 retired Junior Commissioned Officers (JCOs), Non-Commissioned Officers (NCOs) and others are being hired by the paramilitary force to enhance its capabilities to undertake counter-IED operations in Naxal-affected areas where the force has deployed more than 75,000 troops.
