Gowda plans to meet Prez on cattle bill
Taking serious note of the Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Bill 2010, the Janata Dal (Secular) national president and former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda would lead a delegation to President Pratibha Patil on the August 5 to request her to reject the bill.
Speaking to journalists this evening, Mr Gowda said that the controversial bill is against the interests of the farmers, dalits, minorities and above all anti-trader. He clarified that his party has no issues with the old bill that explicitly bans only cow-slaughter. Now, since the term “cattle” is included, his party is tooth and nail against it.
Mr Gowda is all set to be accompanied by a 50-member party delegation including sitting MLAs, MLCs, former ministers and sitting members of Parliament.
The delegation would include among others former chief minister and state Janata Dal (Secular) president H.D. Kumaraswamy, state working president P.G.R. Sindhia, state legislature party leader H.D. Revanna and national secretary general Kunwar Danish Ali.
“We will meet the President of India on August 5 to request not to give the assent to the bill. We will submit a memorandum in this regard,” said Mr Gowda. He added that the bill had communal overtones and was bound to create friction among different communities.
