Gruesome mob action kills man in Kerala
A 26-year-old youth, Shaheed Bava, who was tied up and allegedly beaten in a mob action died in a city hospital on Sunday afternoon.
It was on Wednesday night that a 15-member gang attacked Bava at Kodiyathur, near Mukkam, alleging that he was having illicit relationship with an area woman.
According to reports, the mob was angry because Bava had ignored warnings to stay away from the house, where two women were staying.
Despite Bava's attempt to escape by climbing a tree, the attackers forced him down by pelting stones and then assaulted him with iron rods.
"Such was the rage of the attackers that they also prevented local people from taking Bava to the hospital and left him bleeding and tied to a lamppost for three hours," said Abdul Karim, a relative of the victim.
Even pleas from Bava’s family members, who rushed to the spot, did not move the attackers.
Mukkam police then forced their way in, untied a semi-conscious Bava and rushed him to a hospital. He succumbed to injuries two days later.
Police have identified 12 persons involved in the attack following a complaint Bava's kin and have arrested an Abdul Rahman, known as Cheriayappa, 54.
Others remain absconding.
Police chief, Jacob Punnoose, told reporters in Thrissur that charges of culpable homicide would be registered against all the accused.
In October, Reghu, from Palakkad, was thrashed to death at a KSRTC bus stand in Perambavur by a mob which accused him of picking pockets.
Following Bava's death, opposition Left Democratic Hront have called for a 12-hour strike in Kodiyathur on Monday as protest.
Noted academic and writer, Mr M.N. Karasserry, had described the incident as 'barbaric' adding it was 'yet another shameful blot' on the social fabric of Kerala.
